A moveable strip in the road surface is pushed down as traffic passes over it. A mechanism beneath the road surface causes this movement by means of a drive shaft, which is then coupled to an alternator.

An alternator of up to 2 megawatts (comparable to that of a wind turbine) can be used.

The strip is pushed flat into the road surface as vehicles pass over it. This system means that, in principle, the speed of the vehicles does not make any difference. High quality spring pumps then push the strip back to the original position (approximately 12 cm above the road surface). The strip responds to pressure of as little as approximately 1 Kg (10 Newtons).
